i just knew
there are certain questions you ask while on the interview trail. some, you hope others ask. some, you hope will get you the answer you want, but inevitably, make you feel worse about yourself. that question to the residents has been 'why did you choose this place?' now, i like where this is going. there is no douchey statistical response (there was one guy who asked something like 'how many upper extremity nerve blocks do you do 2/3 of the way through your 2nd year, on average?'). you are not only trying to get at the vibe of a place, but get some insight into how i should be making my decision. tell me how you decided, because honestly, i have no clue. the response has been totally and consistently unhelpful, or worse. the answer: 'i just knew, i ranked it #1'. great. i dont 'just know' anything. and while i think im an excellent judger (if that was a profession, i would do that instead of medicine or aerobics instructor....stacy and clinton, you have my job) i cant just judge my life and future based on 6 hours and the quality of sandwich you gave me. i need more than that. 'i just knew.' bs. yes, im calling you on your bs. and the to add 'i ranked it #1'!. well congratulations. im glad that all worked out for you.
