Israeli financial advice, personalized

In explaining the us medical school system (quite different from theirs, both of which are kind of ugh) I told one of the doctors that im lucky to go to a state school because ill only be like, lets say, ballpark figure of $100,000 in debt (eeek, even writing that gives me the heeby jeebies) as opposed to people who go to fancy shmancy private schools with impressive names who might owe 3 times that. Sounds pretty good, right? So IMD (im officially coining the usage of IMD as Israeli doctor) was like, so you live with your parents, right? My response might have been something like ‘oh hell no!’ considering the above conversation plus the fact that most Israelis live with their parents until marriage or even after or forever, the IMD seemed a bit perplexed. So I continued… ‘but don’t worry, the feeling is mutual, I think if I ever told my parents I was going to move home, they might actually pay for me not too.’ Still perplexed. ‘we just don’t do that in America.’ Which seems to be my standard response, like it is a good excuse. IMD: ‘so you have a job too?’ Me: ‘um, no, being in school is a full time job, two full time jobs (‘80 hour work week my bum’ was thought, not said out loud)’ IMD: ‘Israeli medical students work on the weekends, they waitress, work in stores, etc. Why can’t you work on the weekends?’ Honestly, I don’t know what I do on the weekends. Omelettes? Aerobics with my retirees? Fetal position? Gossip girl? I don’t what takes up my time. But I know I couldn’t have a job. I would be crazy if I did, and go crazier if I had to do it. I need my weekends to…..study? yeah, that’s right. Study. A lot. To save lives. Right.
So to summarize, IMD: So you are in debt, refuse to work, and refuse to live at home.
R: Correct. IMD: this/you are why America is a financial sinkhole.
He might have a point there….
